WHAT IS A CRYOSAUNA?
The IMPACT Cryosauna is a state of the art machine that administers whole body cryotherapy. It is a natural, safe therapy. Whole body cryotherapy stimulates the natural response of your body to cold resulting in the reduction of inflammation and swelling. WBC can lead to the reduction in medication needed for acute and chronic pain.
WHO DEVELOPED THE CRYOSAUNA?
Whole body cryotherapy (WBC) was originally developed in Japan in 1978, and the benefits have been studied and refined in Europe since that time. Whole body cryotherapy has recently been introduced into the USA and is popular among doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists and most professional athletes.
HOW DOES WHOLE BODY CRYOTHERAPY WORK?
The cryosauna uses cryogenic nitrogen vapor to lower the skin surface temperature by 30-50 degrees in under 3 minutes. The skin reacts to the cold and sends messages to the brain that acts as a stimulant to the regulatory functions of the body. The skin exposure to the extreme temperatures also triggers the release of anti-inflammatory molecules, endorphins, increased oxygen in the blood and the release of toxins.
IS WHOLE BODY CRYOTHERAPY SAFE?
Yes! Nitrogen is a non-toxic natural gas. The nitrogen we use to cool the cryosauna is the same nitrogen that makes up the air we breathe (78%). In the cryosauna the client breathes room-air. Problems only arise if a client steps into the cryosauna with wet skin or clothing.
At Star Cryotherapy, we provide dry socks, slippers, gloves and robes. Men must wear dry work-out shorts or underwear and women, dry sports bra and shorts, bathing suit or nothing at all (women only).
HOW DO I FEEL AFTER THE CRYOSAUNA?
During each session the body releases endorphins which are hormones that make you feel good and energetic. The effects from each session last 1 to 3 days (everybody is different), but like any therapy, the more sessions, the better the results. We recommend going at least 3 times a week for the first 2 weeks and then maintenance (1 to 2 times a week) after that. Consistent use of the cryosauna can extend the benefits for greater lengths of time. Decreased inflammation is experienced. Clients suffering from pain in general will experience relief almost immediately
Cryosauna sessions will also increase your metabolic rate, burning 500-800 calories that day. Whole body cryotherapy used on a regular basis can help your body reset its metabolism.
DO I EXERCISE BEFORE OR AFTER WHOLE BODY CRYOTHERAPY?
Yes! It is safe either way. If you exercise before whole body cryotherapy, you will experience increased energy and greater recovery due to the reduction in inflammation. We recommend waiting at least an hour after exercise before cryo for maximum benefits. If you exercise after the cryosauna, you will experience a higher pain tolerance and more energy.
IS WHOLE BODY CRYOTHERAPY THE SAME AS AN ICE BATH?
No! Whole body cryotherapy is an advanced form of ice therapy but not the same. Ice baths can last up to 20 minutes, are painful and damaging to the skin. In the cryosauna, the skin is never penetrated, yet the body responds on a deeper level, and improves the skin’s overall condition. Whole body cryotherapy is much faster, 3 minutes or less, and results in better recovery which leads to better performance.
WILL I BE ABLE TO STAND THE COLD?
There is no actual freezing, only the feeling of being cold. Whole body cryotherapy is simply very cold air flowing over the surface of the skin. The air is completely dry and safe with the protective gloves, socks and slippers we provide.
IF I AM CLAUSTROPHOBIC CAN I USE THE CRYOSAUNA?
Yes! The door is never locked and a Cryo Technician is with you at all times. You can request to step out at any time. Upon entering the cryosauna, a Cryo Technician sets the risers so that your head is exposed above the cryosauna. Clients breathe room-air and an oxygen monitor is operating at all times.
WHO SHOULD NOT USE WHOLE BODY CRYOTHERAPY?
The following conditions are contraindications to whole body cryotherapy: Pregnancy, severe Hypertension (BP> 180/100), acute or recent myocardial infarction, unstable angina pectoris, arrhythmia, symptomatic cardiovascular disease, cardiac pacemaker, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, venous thrombosis, acute or recent cerebrovascular accident, uncontrolled seizures, Raynaud’s Syndrome, fever, tumor disease, symptomatic lung disorders, bleeding disorders, severe anemia, infection, claustrophobia, cold allergy, age less than 18 years (parental consent to treatment needed), acute kidney and urinary tract diseases.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF WHOLE BODY CRYOTHERAPY?
Whole body cryotherapy is very well tolerated and has minimal risks: Fluctuations in blood pressure during the procedure by up to 10 points systolically (this effect reverses after the end of the procedure, as peripheral circulation returns to normal), allergic reaction to extreme cold (rare), redness, and skin burns (only if exposed to low temperatures longer than recommended).
